How to Apply Makeup Like a Pro
Applying makeup doesn’t follow a set sequence; how and in what order you do it is entirely up to you. No matter the order chosen, however, cleansing skin thoroughly before applying primer should always come first.
Step two involves applying foundation that complements your natural skin tone, then setting it with face powder for a natural-looking result.
Foundation
Makeup application can be an art, from perfectly applying winged eyeliner to highlighting cheekbones in all the right places. But when it comes to foundation, there’s much to keep in mind for natural-looking coverage that blends in seamlessly. To start off right, invest in quality clean foundation that matches both your skin tone and type; cleanse with gentle cleanser before exfoliating to remove dead cells before finishing by applying light moisturizer as part of your makeup routine.
Before committing to the shade of foundation you choose, test its hue before making your decision by swatching it on the back of your hand in natural lighting and dabbing it onto your face with either a brush or sponge (the latter being most popular). When using sponges be sure to use both ends – the wide end for large areas such as forehead, nose and chin areas while narrow end is best used on smaller spots around eyes and mouth areas. A great foundation should blend seamlessly into the rest of your skin without leaving noticeable lines between areas – don’t be shy when trying different shades until finding what suits you best!
Finally, set your foundation with translucent powder to avoid looking cakey or too heavy. This step is especially crucial for oily skin types as it will extend wear time and reduce shine throughout the day. Once complete, finish your face look with blusher, highlighter and lipstick for the finishing touch!
Concealer
Concealer can do wonders for your skin. It can help conceal blemishes, brighten under-eyes and disguise flaws and lines for an undetectable finish – but just like with foundation, there are certain steps that make all the difference when it comes to applying concealer like an expert.
Prior to applying your makeup, always apply a hydrating moisturizer first. This will allow all the products you are applying to blend seamlessly and appear natural, and help maintain an energised complexion while helping avoid dullness.
After moisturizing, apply a thin layer of foundation using either a brush or Beautyblender and blend over the entire face and neck ensuring to cover any redness, blemishes and imperfections. It is wise to choose an exact shade concealer as this will provide seamless and undetectable results.
Patinkin suggests using your jawline as an indicator for which shade to choose. Or seek help at a makeup counter; their experts may offer more specific suggestions.
Once you’ve chosen your ideal concealer shade, be careful when applying it around the eyes. Too much can crease and create an unsightly appearance.
Patinkin recommends setting concealer with translucent powder. She likes using a velour puff soaked with setting powder; you could also opt for regular fluffy face powder instead. Once everything has set properly, your complexion can now take the stage! Blush
Blush is the ultimate makeup product to give your skin that “just got up from bed” glow. Though there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to applying blush, with some practice it can become seamless and natural looking.
Step one is selecting a blush formula and shade suitable to your complexion. While powder blush typically looks best, cream or liquid blush options may also work effectively.
When selecting the ideal powder brush, look for something with soft, dense natural or vegan hair, large surface area for blending, and soft touch – The Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab recommends the Sigma Beauty F10 Powder/Blush Brush which features all three qualities and can easily blend. Liquid and cream blushes should use smaller brushes like MODA(r) BRUSH Neon Angle Contour/Blush Brush as recommended by Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab.
Once you’ve selected the ideal formula and brush, it’s time to get to work. Begin by dabbing a pea-size amount of product onto each side of your face (think front parts of cheeks that protrude when smiling) using either your fingers or an ORIGINAL BEAUTYBLENDER Makeup Sponge to blend out and diffuse color evenly across your complexion.
Make sure to only apply small amounts of blush as overdoing it is easy. If this has happened to you, some translucent powder may help balance out your appearance.
To create the classic look, apply blush to the apples of your cheeks (the center part that protrudes when smiling), as Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s makeup artist Florrie White suggests. Additionally, it can also be applied directly onto temples for an eye-opening effect – this technique was suggested to her by Florrie White herself!
Eyeshadow
Eyeshadow is one of the key makeup applications to creating any look imaginable, whether dramatic or natural. Eyeshadow has the power to make or break an entire ensemble.
Start out right when applying eyeshadow like a pro: with primer and your desired base shade. With a flat brush, apply this hue along the lids up to your brow bone to brighten them up and set you up for future shades.
Next, use a medium shade to define and accentuate your eye crease, adding dimension and dimension to your eyes. Blend this in well so there are no harsh lines. Finally, apply dark shadow to the outer corner and inward into your crease for added intensity before finishing this look with light eyeshadow applied to inner corner and brow bone to further emphasize it.
Applying eyeshadow properly is an art, and takes practice to perfect. But with careful planning and application of appropriate tools and techniques, stunning eyes can be achieved with little effort! Just remember to blend!
An effective set of brushes is also essential when applying eyeshadow. A professional makeup artist should always have three essential brushes available: blending, shader and pencil brushes. Blending brushes are designed for blending colors together while shader brushes excel at packing on product while pencil brushes help define fine lines.
Lipstick
Lipstick can be an invaluable weapon when it comes to amplifying any makeup look, from bold fashion statements to adding some color into everyday routines. Although swiping on lipstick might seem easy, for optimal results there are a few steps you must follow for maximum effect.
First things first: always start by using a lip liner to create an even and precise canvas for applying lipstick without making mistakes or leaving behind smudges. Once your pencil lines have been drawn out, soften their appearance further by blending with fingers or brush.
Next, choose your lipstick and apply it evenly all over your lips, taking special care to cover both inner corners. For an intensified color pop add another coat; be sure to wait several minutes between each application though in order for the hue to settle and dry fully before doing so!
An application of lip gloss will make lips appear fuller if they are small or thin, especially if applied along their edges with powder for a clean and defined appearance.
Before applying the final coat of lip color, be sure to blot them with tissue. This will extend its wear time and prevent it from migrating onto other objects such as your coffee mug or food! In addition, it’s wise to blot before leaving home in humid environments to help your lips stay looking their best while preventing peeling or flaking.
